Add an orderable to the catalogue in Forge, set its details, coding and price, and make it available for clinicians to order.
The catalogue is the fixed set of items a clinician can order. You add an item here in Forge, set its details, coding and price, and make it available for clinicians to order.
What an orderable is
An orderable is one item in the catalogue that a clinician can request: a medicine, a laboratory test, an imaging study, a procedure, a consultation or a form. You author it once, and every order for it starts from the same agreed detail.

Each item carries the detail an order needs, so the order arrives complete at the service that fulfils it.

Add the item

Open the catalogue
In Forge, open the catalogue for the site and choose the family the item belongs to, such as medicines, tests or procedures. Choose Add item, and the item form opens.

Name and code the item
Enter the name as it reads when a clinician orders, and the code from the standard the item is coded against, such as
SNOMED CT,LOINCorICD-11. The code travels onto every order for the item. - 3
Set the kind and priority
Choose the kind and, where it helps, a default priority of
RoutineorUrgent. The kind decides how the order behaves and where it goes. - 4
Set verification and visit types
Set requiresVerification where an order for the item waits to be checked before work begins. Choose the visit types the item is offered for, so it appears on the right kinds of visit.

Set the routing
Set routesTo, the service or unit that fulfils the order. An order placed against the item reaches that service ready to act on.

Set the charge
Attach the charge master entry the item bills against, so a chargeable order raises the right charge. A form carries none. Read how a charge is created when a chargeable order is placed.

Attach a result form
For a laboratory test or an imaging study, attach the result form a result is recorded on, so a result lands in the same shape every time.

Save and publish
Choose Save. The item joins the catalogue and reads as available. From now, a clinician chooses it when placing an order.
The item and the order
Choosing an item resolves it into a clinician's order, and Forge freezes a snapshot of it at that moment. A later change to the catalogue describes the item from then on and leaves placed orders as they stood.
A placed order holds its own snapshot
When an order is placed, Forge records a snapshot of the item exactly as it stood. Editing the catalogue afterwards leaves that placed order as it was, so the history reads exactly as it was at the time of the decision. Read the ordered snapshot.

Does a change to the item affect placed orders?
A placed order holds a snapshot taken at placement, so a later change describes the item from then on and leaves the placed order as it was.
Where does the price come from?
From the charge master you attach, priced through the tariff that applies to the payer. Read about tariffs and rate cards.
Does every site share one catalogue?
Each site keeps its own catalogue, so the items match that site's services. Shared reference data is managed centrally, so codes stay aligned. Read about the catalogue.
