Procedure

Admit a patient to a bed

Admit a patient to a ward bed in Gate, choose the bed, and open the ward record so nursing care and orders begin.

You admit a patient to a ward bed in Gate, the tool that opens every visit. You choose the bed, settle the account, and open the ward record so nursing care and orders begin.

An admission is a visit that keeps a patient in a ward bed under nursing care. It opens in Gate, attaches to the patient record, and moves through a short lifecycle from registered to discharged.

Before you start

A few things hold before the admission goes smoothly. The list below is the common ready state.

Done. You are signed in as yourself on the ward workstation.
Done. The patient holds a record in Pensieve.
Outstanding.A bed is free in your ward.
Done.You hold permission to admit.

If the patient is new, register them at the front desk first, then return here. Read how to register a new patient.

Admit the patient

  1. 1

    Open the patient's desk

Search for the patient on the front desk and open their desk. The desk shows the patient's identity, their visits, and their appointments. If several records match, confirm the identity before you go on.

  2. 2

    Start the admission

Press Admit Now. The admission form opens against this patient. If the button is greyed, its tooltip states the reason, usually a missing permission or a visit already open for this patient.

  3. 3

    Choose the visit type

Choose Inpatient from the visit type list. The form shows the beds, care team and items an inpatient stay needs. If the patient stays for a single day, choose Day-care instead.

  4. 4

    Choose the bed

Pick your ward and a free bed, such as Bed 7, then set the care team and the responsible consultant. The bed shows as assigned. If the bed you want is taken, choose another free bed in the ward.

  5. 5

    Settle the account

Work through the finance panel to set the payer and any deposit. A self-paying patient can pay at the desk. The account reads ready.

  6. 6

    Create the admission

Press Admit. The form clears and the patient appears on the active-admissions list, marked Registered. If the write times out, the form stays open with the message, so press Admit again.

  7. 7

    Open the ward record

Tap the patient's row to open the ward record in Atlas. Confirm the prompt to move the visit to Ongoing. Nursing care and orders begin from here.

The record stays truthful

Every entry names the nurse who made it and the moment they made it. On a shared ward workstation, sign in as yourself, so the record stays clear about who admitted the patient.

From registered to ongoing

A new admission opens as Registered. It becomes Ongoing the moment you open the ward record and confirm the change. Orders and doses run against the Ongoing visit.

Common questions

What if the patient already has an active admission?

The Admit Now button greys and its tooltip names the open visit. A patient holds one active admission at a time, so continue or close the existing one.

Is admitting the same as booking an appointment?

An admission opens a visit now. An appointment holds a slot for later. Book an appointment when the patient is expected another day.

When do orders and doses start?

Once you open the ward record and the visit reads Ongoing. A clinician then places orders, and each ordered dose becomes a due task.
