Procedure

Open a patient record

Open a patient record in Atlas, move through the history, results and orders, and read the current picture before you act.

Atlas is the patient record. You open it from a patient in Gate or from your worklist, then move through the history, results and orders and read the current picture before you act.

What opens the record

Atlas opens from a patient, so you reach it from a search result in Gate, from your worklist, or from the emergency intake. It opens onto the record of the patient you chose, with the current visit in view.

Open the record

  1. 1

    Sign in as yourself

Sign in at the ward workstation with your own PIN, passkey or hardware key. You land in your own session, and every entry you make carries your name. If several people share the screen, each signs in as themselves, so the record stays attributable through the shift.

  2. 2

    Find the patient

Find the patient from Patient search in Gate or from your worklist. Confirm you have the right person by name and identifier before you open the record. If two patients read alike, the identifier settles which record is theirs.

  3. 3

    Open Atlas on the patient

Choose Open record. Atlas opens onto the patient. The info-bar spine along the top shows who the patient is, the primary diagnosis, and the chronic conditions and allergies on the record. Your role and this patient's admission decide what paints.

  4. 4

Begin care if the visit is still registered

A visit that is registered is pre-clinical. When you open a registered visit, Atlas asks you to confirm you are beginning care. Choose Yes and the visit moves to ongoing, ready for diagnoses and orders. If you opened it in error, choose No and the record stays closed.

Read the current picture

The record opens as a set of cards you arrange on the canvas. Each card is one part of the patient's picture, and your arrangement is kept for you against this patient.

CardWhat it shows
Add OrdersPlaces an order of any kind for this patient, once a diagnosis is recorded.
View OrdersEvery order for the patient, grouped into this visit, past visits, and care at other sites.
TemplatesThe forms attached to this record, and the responses already filled.
CadenceThe processes running for this patient, and the step each one is on.
FinanceThe account for the visit, with charges as they stand.
TriageThe triage level for an emergency patient, set and updated here.

The info-bar spine stays pinned while you work, so identity, the primary diagnosis and the allergy strip are in view whatever card you open. The allergy strip reads from the record itself, so it follows the patient across every visit and every site.

When access holds

Atlas decides what you see from your role and your relationship to the patient in front of you. A current care relationship, opened by admission, is what ties your role to this record.

Emergency access is a recorded path

When you need a record urgently and your care relationship is still to be established, use emergency access. Atlas opens the record and records your name, the time and the reason you gave. A reviewer sees that entry afterwards, so urgent care and a clear account hold together.

If the record stays closed after you choose the patient, confirm at the desk that the patient's visit is open at this site. A record for a discharged patient opens for reading within a short window after discharge; beyond it, emergency access reaches the record.

Common questions

Why did Atlas ask me to confirm before the record opened?

The visit was still registered, which is the pre-clinical state. Confirming moves it to ongoing and marks that clinical care has begun.

Can I see care the patient had at another site?

Yes. The patient's clinical record belongs to the patient and has no owning hospital. It exists once and follows the patient, so View Orders draws together care from every hospital that has treated them, and the history reads as one record. The organisation is the custodian of the care it delivers, not the owner of the record.

Someone else is on this workstation. Do I need a fresh sign-in?

Sign in as yourself. Each session is its own on a shared screen, so the record names the person who actually acted.

Record a diagnosis next, so you can place the first order on the visit.
