Your session and timeout

See how long your session stays open, what a timeout does, and how to sign back in and pick up where you were.

Your session is your signed-in time on a workstation, held under your name. This page shows how long it stays open, what a timeout does, and how to sign back in and pick up where you were.

How long it lasts

Your session stays open while you work. After a spell without activity, it times out and locks the screen.

Your administrator sets the length of that spell for your site. The reference on sessions and timeouts carries the values in force.

On a shared workstation, a colleague signing in as themselves also ends your session. The page on signing in on a shared workstation sets out how that handover works.

Figure 1.Diagram showing a session moving from signed in, to a locked screen after a spell without activity, and back on sign-in, with sign-out and a colleague signing in as the ways it ends.

What a timeout does

A timeout locks the screen and holds your place. Your work stays safe, and your session waits for you to return.

A timeout guards an open screen

A timeout protects the record when a screen is left open on a busy ward. The next person meets a locked screen and signs in as themselves.

Sign back in

  1. 1

    Wake the locked screen

Tap a key or touch the screen.

Expected: the sign-in panel shows your name.

If you find another name, select your own instead.

  2. 2

    Enter your PIN

Type your PIN and select Sign in.

Expected: the Chamber opens where you left it.

If the PIN is held after several tries, wait a short while, then try again.

  3. 3

    Carry on

Your open tool returns with your place kept.

Expected: the entry you were working on waits for you.

If an entry looks incomplete, read If you lost unsaved work.

Sessions on your phone

You carry a view of your open sessions on your phone. Sign one out from there when you leave a workstation behind.

  1. 1

    Open your sessions

Open Pensieve on your phone and go to Your sessions.

Expected: a list of the workstations and devices where you are signed in.

If a session you expected is absent, it has already ended.

  2. 2

    Sign one out

Select a session and choose Sign out to end it remotely.

Expected: that session closes, and its next request returns to the sign-in panel.

If a session lingers after you leave a screen, sign it out from here.

Your place is held and your work stays safe. Sign back in with your PIN to continue where you left off.

Does a timeout sign me out everywhere?

A timeout locks the one screen. Your sessions on other devices stay as they are, and you view them on your phone.

How long is a session?

Your administrator sets the length for your site. The sessions and timeouts reference carries the values in force.
