Dispense a medication
Dispense a verified medication in Forge, record the quantity and batch, and update the order so the ward sees it is ready.
A verified medication order is ready to dispense. Record the quantity and batch in Forge, the order system, and the order updates so the ward sees the medication is ready.
Before you start
Sign in as yourself on the pharmacy workstation. Open the verified order from your worklist. Forge records each dispense against the order, with your name and the time.
What a dispense records
A dispense captures what you issue and when. The count is strips or vials, with the batch and expiry read from the pack.

Open the verified order
Select the verified medication order in your pharmacy worklist.
The order shows a status of

Open the dispense form
Select Record dispense on the order.
The dispense form opens, ready for the quantity, batch and expiry.

Record the quantity, batch and expiry
Enter the
quantityyou issue as a count of strips or vials. Add thebatchnumber and theexpirydate from the pack.The form holds the detail of what you are issuing.
If you issue more than one pack, set the
quantityto the total number of packs. - 4
Confirm the dispense
Select Confirm to record the dispense.
Forge adds the dispense to the order's history with your name and the time, and moves the operational step to
dispensed. A charge is raised for the quantity you issued.If the course goes out in more than one batch, record each dispense on its own, and each carries its own charge.

Hand the medication to the ward
The order now shows the medication as dispensed. When the ward takes delivery, the step moves to
received in ward, and the dose is ready to administer.The ward sees the order is ready on the patient's active orders.
A recorded dispense stays fixed
A recorded dispense and its charge stay fixed. To correct one, record a new dispense, and the billing counter issues any credit note that the account needs.
Common questions
How is a dispensed medication charged?
Per dispense, for the strips or vials you issue, at the moment you record it. A course dispensed twice carries two charges, one for each issue.
Can I edit a dispense after I confirm it?
The dispense and its charge stay fixed. To correct it, record a fresh dispense, and the billing counter issues any credit note the account needs.
What if the drug is out of stock or needs a change?
Handle a substitution, which records the swap and keeps the original order on the record.
