Duty rosters
Describes how duty rosters record who is on shift, and how the roster informs cover, access and the assignment of care.
A duty roster records who is on shift, when and where across a site. This page describes how the roster is built, and how it informs cover, access and the assignment of care.
What a roster records
A duty roster is the record of who is on shift at a site over a period. Each entry is a duty: the person, the shift, the place they cover and the span of time.
| Field | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Person | The member of staff on duty. |
| Shift | The period of the duty, such as a day or a night shift. |
| Place | The unit or service the person covers. |
| Leave | Time a person is away, and the cover arranged for it. |
Building the roster
The roster is generated from a shift template over a period. An administrator generates the duties for a date range from a template, and the platform fills the roster with the duties that result.
Cover and leave
When a person takes leave, the roster records it and arranges cover for the duties it touches.
Extending leave over a duty that is already covered moves the affected duties to other staff, so the gap is filled and the roster stays whole. A manager sees the duties a change touches before it lands.
What the roster drives
The roster drives cover, access and the assignment of care.
Cover
Cover is who fills a gap when a person is away. The roster holds the arrangement, so a shift always shows who stands in.
Access
Being on duty is part of a current care relationship, so a person on shift reaches the patients in their care. As a shift changes, the access that follows it changes with it. Read roles and relationships.
Assignment of care
Due tasks land with whoever is on shift. Quest reads the roster, so a scheduled dose or a reminder reaches the person on duty. Read about your due list.
