Concept explainer

People and roles

Explains how staff are held as people with roles, and how a role sets the work a person does and the access they hold.

Staff are held as people, and each person holds one or more roles. This page explains how a person and a role are modelled, and how a role sets the work a person does and the access they hold.

People

A person is a member of staff, held once in the hospital model with their own identity. A person belongs to a site, works within a unit or a service, and holds one or more roles.

namestring

The person's name, held once for the whole organisation.

sitereference

The site the person works at.

roleslist

The roles the person holds, each setting work and access.

servicereference

The service or unit the person belongs to.

Roles

A role is the named function a person performs, such as consultant, nurse, pharmacist or billing clerk. A role sets the work a person may do across the platform.

RoleTypical work
ConsultantSees patients, records diagnoses and places orders.
NurseRecords observations and gives medication at the bedside.
PharmacistVerifies and dispenses medication orders.
Billing clerkRaises and settles charges for a visit.

What a role grants

A role sets the work a person may do and shapes the access they hold. Reaching a specific patient's record draws on the role together with a current care relationship, so access stays tied to a present reason to see the record.

Role and relationship together

A role sets the shape of a person's work. Reaching a specific patient's record also draws on a current care relationship, established by admission and consent, so access follows a present reason. Read roles and relationships and how a permission is decided.

Signing in

Each person has their own identity, so every entry stays attributed to the person who made it.

On a shared clinical workstation, sign-in is quick, and each session belongs to the person using it, so the record stays truthful about who acted through a shift. Read how the dock presents the work a person holds.

Common questions

Can a person hold more than one role?

Yes. A person can hold several roles, and each role adds the work and the access it carries.

Does a role open a patient's record on its own?

A record opens when a role and a current care relationship agree, so access follows a present reason to see the patient.

Where is a person's name held?

With the organisation, once. A person works at a site, while their identity carries across the organisation.
